🎨 XeroLinux Plymouth Manager 🎨

Info

This script was created for Arch & Arch-Derivatives with the Chaotic-AUR repo enabled, since most if not all themes come from there. For a guide on how to enable it please Click Here.

Above is one of the many available themes. Looks amazing doesn't it ?

What is plymouth

Plymouth is a project from Fedora and now listed among the freedesktop's official resources providing a flicker-free graphical boot process. It relies on Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) to set the native resolution of the display as early as possible, then provides an eye-candy splash screen leading all the way up to the login manager.

TUI Information

This is my Plymouth manager script/TUI. It allows you to install Plymouth and manage themes the easy way. It also has an option that safely reverts any changes should you not want it anymore. It was created for fun, during my spare time.

Now, I know I could have created a GUI instead making it more user-friendly. But nahh am more of a script kiddie, I prefer scripts over GUI any day of the week. However if you want to do that, feel free, just make sure to credit me and share so I can see what you have done.

It's FOSS after all, am I right ?

Install & Usage

Before you grab n use this script, please read the info box on top of this page, and only proceed once repo has been enabled. Doing so without it will result in failure. With that out of the way, here's how to use the script...

Pre-Rquisites :

sudo pacman -S wget git

Installation :

wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/XeroLinuxDev/extra-scripts/refs/heads/main/usr/local/bin/xpm
chmod + xpm && sh xpm

plymouth

Nerd Note :

FYI, if you are nerdy enough, you can also move this script into /usr/local/bin/ so you don't have to keep looking for it. This will make it so all you have to do is type xpm (or whatever you renamed script to) in terminal, just like you would fastfetch.

Script Usage :

Select 1st option to install and activate Plymouth. 2nd option is where all the fun happens. Use it to install and mange themes. Use Sub-Option a to do that. Sub-Option p will open your browser to a Github repo where you will be able to preview some of the included themes.

That said, once you have installed a theme select sub-option b to apply it. You can also install a bunch of themes then go back apply & test each one. That's it !

Issues & Fixes

  • Boot Delay

In many cases, on a very fast system with an nVme SSD boot animation can go by way too quickly. To solve that please do the following to add a short delay to boot sequence :

sudo systemctl edit plymouth-quit.service --drop-in=long_splash.conf

Add the following to that file :

[Service]
ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/sleep 6

delay

Adjust delay to fit your setup. Save it and apply with sudo systemctl daemon-reload.

  • Multi-Monitor

In a multi-monitor setup, Plymouth might not show the animation scaled correctly. To fix that, do the following :

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Then use a tool like xrandr to identify your primary monitor, and add it to grub's GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=' line, like so video=DP-1:1920x1080@60, replacing the DP-1 with yours. Save and exit, then update grub with the following command :

sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Once all that is done, reboot and enjoy ;)

Be G33ky & Enjoy 🤓
